This is a leather belt that belonged to my Grandfather Herbert Toeppner. While serving in the army in World War One he collected these hat badges. We assume that he traded his regiment's badges for these or bought them from the other soldiers. Grandpa was stationed overseas during the war although he did not see any combat. He spent some time in Scotland helping to cut timbers for the war effort. I remember Grandpa saying that when he first arrived at the camp they were looking for people to drive the horses. Grandpa didn't really want to be doing that while in the army so he told his sargent that he didn't know anything about horses. He looked at him and said that a man growing up on a farm in Northern Ontaio had to know how to drive a team of horses. Needless to day Grandpa worked with horses while overseas.
